Welcome to Bow Valley High School for the 2010-2011 school year. We are pleased and excited to have you as a member of our learning community. Bow Valley has a tradition of academic excellence. This has been achieved through positive and respectful relationships and involvement of all stakeholders in providing a well rounded High School experience. You are part of a caring community that values each person and encourages ownership of your own learning and diligent pursuit of your studies.
We look forward to a year of success and growth for all of our students with the goal of positioning our seniors well for a smooth transition to being productive global citizens beyond High School.
Please take the time to review the information in this handbook. You are expected to be familiar with the student code of conduct and all policies and procedures that are in this handbook. Also note the calendar and list of important dates for the year. For an overview of Bow Valley High School, please check our website.
How the needs of the 21st century learner are being supported in Bow Valley High School
Since its inception Bow Valley has had a focus on Inquiry based learning. This type of learning is supported through purposeful practice and technological advancements. Access to digital resources will be readily available in every class at any time through the one to one initiative that will see laptops required by all students.
The practice of teachers has started to reflect 21st century practice with the use of Mimio technology, smart boards and I-pads. Pod casts, interactive posters and video conferencing are examples of new innovated ways to engage students with the use of the technology. With these tools we are also able to expand our shared programming by giving access to programs offered outside of Bow Valley. Bow Valley teachers are also using these tools to share their expertise with other RVS students.
Teacher’s practice of utilizing new technology has increased their ability to differentiate lessons and has broadened assessment practices allowing more students to better demonstrate their learning of curriculum. Our AISI and department work features time devoted to expanding teacher’s 21st century toolkit. The addition of a 21st Century Learning Lead teacher role has also benefitted staff.
The school has expanded modes of communication by use of plone and moodle sites for student access to lessons, homelogic to keep parents up to date on school information as well as blogs, wikis, facebook and twitter to get feedback from students and parents.
Professional Learning for staff is an ongoing priority for Rocky View Schools and a great emphasis has been put on the acquisition and implementation of 21st century teaching and learning.
Enjoy the school year as we work and learn together to ensure your future success.

Amanda Peacey, Assistant Principal
